Patrick Holden, CBE, is a true inspiration in the world of nature-friendly and agroecological farming. As part of the Farms Not Factories team, we had the privilege of producing this video, showcasing his incredible work. Having met Patrick at the Oxford Real Farming Conference, it was a pleasure to hear firsthand about his deep commitment to sustainable food systems.
For 50 years, Patrick and his wife, Becky, have been refining their approach to organic dairy farming on their 300-acre farm in West Wales. Their Ayrshire cows graze on diverse, herb-rich pastures, producing the renowned Hafod cheese—proof that farming in harmony with nature can create exceptional food.
Beyond his own farm, Patrick’s influence stretches far and wide. From leading the Soil Association for 15 years to founding The Sustainable Food Trust, he has shaped organic standards, advocated for true cost accounting in food production, and tirelessly worked to ensure that small-scale, high-welfare farming is valued and protected.
This video offers a glimpse into the principles that underpin his work—healthy soil, high-welfare grazing, and a food system that respects both nature and farmers.
